Georgetown South Service Expansion and Union Pearson Rail Link

Improvements:

  • More frequent and convenient service on the Georgetown Corridor
  • New passenger rail service from Pearson International Airport to Union Station along the Georgetown line

Project Description: GO Trains on the Georgetown line are at capacity. The Georgetown South Project will build the core infrastructure to ultimately allow for future all-day, bi-directional GO service. The expanded infrastructure will also enable a rail link between Union Station and Pearson International Airport, Canada’s two busiest transit hubs. This is one of the first big moves to be implemented from the new Regional Transportation Plan – The Big Move - for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

Location: Study area includes the Georgetown Rail Corridor from Bathurst Street Toronto to Highway 427 in Mississauga.

What's New:

Metrolinx has received federal approval and provincial approval with conditions to proceed with the Georgetown South project.

The Environmental Approvals enable Metrolinx to:

  • Implement the Project in accordance with the Environmental Study Reports
  • Develop and implement an air quality monitoring plan
  • Use Tier 4 technology for GO locomotives and the air rail locomotives, when commercially available
  • Provide additional Human Health calculations and assessments based on use and implementation of Tier 4 technology

Next Steps:

Detailed design is underway and construction is expected to begin in late Spring/early Summer 2010. Early in 2010, Metrolinx will be out in the communities to share an outline of what to expect over the next 12 months.

We will continue to send project updates and provide opportunity for neighbourhood comments as progress continues and we have more details to share.
